Abstract
ABSTRACT
Inclusion strategies are how the social actor is mentioned in a representation of the social action. Ordinarily these strategies used by politician in political speech as a form of struggle for power in order to put certain political, economic, and social ideas into practice. In terms of investigating political speech, the researcher using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approaches. It sees language as social practice. It also examines ideological manipulations and power relation used among people manifested in texts. Furthermore, the researcher puts the research on inclusion strategies through political discourse. This research is an attempt to explain how Muammar Al-Gadhafi as a Libyan’s president, represent social actor using inclusion strategies on his political speech at the United Nations General Assembly 2009.
The researcher used Theo van Leeuwen’s theory which is emphasizing on social actor’s representation focuses on inclusion strategy. Methodologically, the researcher use descriptive qualitative study as research design. The objectives of this study are to identify what kinds of inclusion strategies and to describe how the inclusion strategies represented in Muammar Al-Gadhafi’s speech at United Nations General Assembly 2009.
The analysis found some findings covering the research questions. The findings reveal that Muammar Al-Gadhafi employs six types of inclusion strategies such as differentiation, abstraction, categorization, identification, determination, and assimilation to downgrade the power, authority the Security Councils, and to share his ideological struggle against the member of Security Council in United Nations such as United States, Russia, Republic of China, Britain and France and the other allies. Therefore, this study is in line with van Leeuwen’s theory of social actor’s representation which is mainly made up from inclusion.
Finally, the researcher suggests to the next researcher who concern in the similar topic to focus on discussing use one of the inclusion strategies which have been shown as common and effective strategies in this study. By applying this suggestion, it is expected that the next study in this area will be better and will provide more real descriptive knowledge of it.
