Deixis used in the translation of Bulugh Al-Maram

ABSTRACT

The study is aimed at analyzing the deixis used in the translation of Bulugh Al- Maram. There are many authentic books of hadiths, one of them is Bulugh Al-Maram which holds a distinction in the respect that is based on such hadiths of the prophet Muhammad SAW and it contains many kinds of deixis.

The researcher chooses Bulugh Al-Maram as the object to be analyzed since understanding the text especially in the Islamic book is important to avoid misinterpretation. Moreover, the book of hadiths is a guidebook of Moslem besides Al-Qur’an. The researcher used Karl Buhler’s theory to analyze this research that is divided deixis into three types, namely person, place, and time. The researcher analyzed types and using of deixis in the translation of Bulugh Al-Maram.

This study used descriptive qualitative research since the source of data in the form of words and used the textual analysis without using statistical analysis and uses human instrument as the researcher herself.

As the result, the researcher found three types of deixis based on Karl Buhler’s theory. First is Person deixis that almost refers to the Prophet who delivers every hadiths, the narrator of hadiths, and sometimes indicate people in general. Then the researcher explained in detail through the history about the referent of person deixis to make this study is understood by the reader. The next type is time deixis, it is used with the various times and verbs that indicate tense system when the utterance happened. In fact, almost every sentence makes reference to an event time. The last type is place deixis, it is used in describing or naming them and by locating them. Then, the researcher describes the using of deixis in every hadith.

Finally, the researcher suggests to the next researchers to find out deixis in other authentic books of hadiths of English translation or in the some data but with different title. In addition, is also suggested to other researchers to use other theory of deixis on some other areas
