ABSTRACT
Considering about language phenomenon that has been popped in juvenile lately, many linguists believe that slang has much associated with it. It is undeniable that slang is particularly popular among teenagers and college students. It is such a path for them to speak in different and fresh way. Underlying those kinds of social phenomena, here, the researcher is interested in analyzing slangs that are found in Step up 3D and the processes of forming it since it is a kind of teenager’s film expressing teenager’s life.
The researcher employs a descriptive qualitative approach as her research design. In analyzing the data, the researcher conducts several steps. The researcher transfers the film dialogue and subtitle into a script. In this research, the researcher determines the word formation processes in forming slangs by using Ingo Plag’s idea. Then, she found out the slang terms and the process in forming it
Having analyzing the data, the researcher finds that there are 44 data of slang words categorized as word formation processes based on Ingo Plag’s idea, namely: acronym, compounding, clipping, blending, creating new word and using the existing word. However, the most frequently used is using the existing word.
Since it deals with the effect on society, there are some reasons why the characters on that film use slang in their conversation; to get intimacy, to show amazement, to show anger, to simplify their language, to show their identity, to be just for fun, or even solely to be colloquy in conversation. In their relation with Sociolinguistics area, it is proof that slang also become as self explanatory in which it is found in the term BFAB. Here, Born from a Boombox is an epithet for one of a dance group in Step Up 3D. And seeing the context, it is indirectly being such a self- explanatory that they are a dancer, born to be a dancer and proud to be a dancer.
The findings of this study are expected to give a wider horizon about slang’s phenomena, and also can add and enrich the knowledge about slang and the way how to form it. Furthermore, it will give some fresh ideas for further study in this research.
