Abstract
ABSTRACT
Persuasion takes an important part in communication. People cannot deny the existence of persuasion while having communication. It is not in advertisement and politic context only, but also in other contexts such as sermon, courtroom, and so on. Moreover, it relates to an effort to change the interlocutors’ belief, convince them to ensure any information, speech or sermon of the speaker, and keep relationship among people. An important aspect of persuasion is that avoiding violence or coercion while persuading the interlocutors. Therefore, the targets can believe that they decide the right choice to act or to believe. In this thesis, Prophet Muhammad’s sermons become the data source to be analyzed.
This study has two objectives. The first objective is to identify kinds of persuasive strategies used by Prophet Muhammad and the second objective is to describe how Prophet Muhammad applied persuasive strategies in his religious sermons.
The research design of this study used qualitative method. The writer analyzed the data which are in the form of words and utterances by describing and doing interpretation supported by the context of each datum. In addition, she used Aristotle’s theory of persuasion to help her understand and analyze the data found from both sermons.
Accordance with the analysis finding, the writer found all persuasive strategies used in Prophet Muhammad’s sermons as proposed by Aristotle. They are Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. The Prophet Muhammad applied Ethos strategy through the language using pronoun to regard the audience as a part of him, stating name of God to show the consistency, showing comprehensive knowledge by describing or explaining point. He also showed Ethos through the Message by showing his concern on the equality of right among people. To control the emotion of the audience as Pathos strategy, he created fear feeling of audience by uttering a word giving sense of extreme badness, uttering caution words repeatedly, stating command words, portraying frightening events on the Day of Resurrection, disfiguring the other adherents’ destiny, touching the emotion to make them attentively pay attention on his sermons, and giving such legacy as a solution of facing the life well. Those are to raise and alleviate the emotion of audience. Then, for Logos strategy, the Prophet Muhammad emphasized it through the language. He gave example of real phenomenon to represent nonrepresentational event and used simile, used reference and gave testimony, and stated names of groups. Through those strategies, Prophet Muhammad convinced his followers. Therefore, they could believe that Prophet Muhammad told them about something right. For the further researchers who are interested in analyzing persuasion, the writer suggests them to choose different contexts from this study, such as in the courtroom, classroom, and so on. However, if they want to do analysis in the same context, religious sermon, they can analyze sermons delivered by a new priest who changed his belief on certain religion. Instead, they can also use other theories except Aristotle’s theory or Keraf’s theory on persuasion.
