Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research investigates turn taking strategies used by the interviewer of Metro TV Indonesia This Morning. The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds and the way of conversational turn taking strategies used by the interviewer in interview.
The descriptive qualitative method is used to conduct this research and it uses conversation analysis as an approach in analyzing turn taking because this research analyzes phenomena of talk in verbal interaction. To obtain the data, the researcher himself becomes the main instrument by collecting and analyzing the data. The data are collected from turn taking strategies used by IR in interview and it is divided into introductory, main, and final part. The data are transcribed by using Jefferson’s transcription. Then the data are analyzed by using Stenstrom theory on turn taking strategies.
Based on the analysis of the research, the interviewer uses three kinds of turn taking strategies. Those are taking the turn, holding the turn, and yielding the turn. The iinterviewer uses taking the turn strategy when he wants to start conversation or initiate conversation, he uses holding the turn when he wants to carry out speaking. And he uses yielding the turn when he has nothing to say again in conversation or he has said complete sentences. The interviewer uses questions to take and yield the turn in the process of interview. However, the interviewer does not directly give questions to take and yield the turn. The interviewer usually delivers new statement first before giving question. It is purposed to the interviewee in order the interviewee can focus on every subtopic question delivered by the interviewer. In delivering statement itself, three kinds of turn taking strategies have been used.
Based on the findings above, it is suggested that the result of this study as the additional reference for study on turn taking strategies especially in formal setting because this interview is a good example for it provides the data of turn taking strategies. Since this study only analyzes the kinds of turn taking strategies and the way of turn taking is applied, it will be more interesting for the next researcher to analyze by using other theories of Sack, Schegglof, and Jefferson on turn taking strategy such as investigating deeply about preferred dispreferred sequence organization, repairing organization, and insertion sequence. In addition, if the next researcher uses this theory, it will be more interesting to have more than one interviewee because interviewer will have variety of managing turn taking to which interviewees will have the right to answer because unadressed interviewee sometimes may attempt to speak before being appointed. Furthermore, next researcher also can analyze formal conversation such as discussion, debate, and talk show to get more kinds of conversational turn taking strategies by using this theory.
