Code switching used by the characters in A Special Symphony movie

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the code switching phenomena which happen in a movie under the title A Special Symphony. The aim of this study is to find the types and functions of code switching used by the characters in A Special Symphony Movie.

This research used qualitative research because it analyzes the data in the form of words descriptively. The data was taken from script of A Special Symphony movie. In analyzing the type of code switching, the researcher used Romaine’s theory, while the researcher used Koziol’s theory in analyzing the function of code switching.

The results of this study are: (1) there are three types of code switching used by the characters in A Special Symphony movie: tag switching, inter- sentential code switching, and intra-sentential code switching. (2) the function of code switching used by the characters in that movie are personalization, reiteration, substitution, emphasis, clarification, untranslatability, mitigating message, interjection, parenthesis, aggravating message, and topic shift.

From this study, it can give suggestion to the next researcher in improving the same researcher with some different things. For example in research problem, theory, and the languages switch. The next researcher is very expected to make research about why and how the code switching phenomena happens by using different theory with this research. Beside that, the next researcher is suggested to analyze code switching more than two languages.
