Abstract
ABSTRACT
This thesis analyzes the figurative language in the lyrics of Maher Zain’s song to find out the types of figurative language. Figurative language is a language which incorporates the speaker’s desire, to touch the emotion, to cause shock, and persuade into action (Peter, 2002: 12). And, the functions of each figurative language use speech acts theory, exactly illocutionary act. Function is another name of speech acts (Yule, 1996: 27). The researcher chooses Maher Zain’s songs which become the data since his songs are famous and phenomenal which succeed in persuading the listeners. Another reason is the content the songs which consist of many types of figurative language.
This research uses descriptive qualitative research method. There are some steps that are employed by the researcher to analyze this study. First, the researcher takes the data from the internet; (http://gudanglagu.com/category/m/maher-zain/ and http://www.islamiclyrics.net/maher-zain/). Second, the researcher reads the whole transcription of the lyrics carefully. Third, the researcher tries to find out a figurative language in each data by giving a code. And then, the researcher classifies the types of each data in italic and bold font. The last step is analyzing each data to find types and functions of each figurative language.
After analyzing the data, the researcher found some types of figurative language such as, metaphor, simile, personification, irony, metonymy, litotes and hyperbole in the Maher Zain’s songs, and also found the functions of each such as representative, expressive, and declaration. Representative is used to describe, claim, and emphasize. Expressive is used to express psychological state of the situation such as pain, like, dislike, joy, and sorrow. And the last is declaration which includes of several acts such as declaring, divorcing, resigning, and firing. And those findings deal with Islamic view.
There is still much linguistic uniqueness in the Maher Zain’s songs. This research only focuses on the types and function of figurative language in the lyrics of Maher Zain’s songs. For the next researchers, they can concern in the language identity, such as background, culture, context, and life style of the interlocutor.
