Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language can be understood as a system of pattern in which it is studied in Syntax area. As the branch of linguistics, Syntax is concerned with the ways which words can be combined together to form phrases and sentences. Moreover, this study aims to find out the syntactic patterns of surface structure and deep structure on the English translation of Surah As-Sajadah which are analyzed through the theory of tree diagrams proposed by Dianne Bornstein.
In conducting this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method, since, the data are in the form of text and it is analyzed without any statistical procedures. Besides, it is also presented descriptively based on the theory of tree diagrams. The data of this study were taken from the English translation of Surah As- Sajadah which is translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Then, the researcher analyzed the whole sentences of this Surah which consists of thirty verses. Furthermore, in analyzing the data, the researcher did some steps, including, writing down the English translation of Surah As-Sajadah, analyzing it based on surface structure and deep structure by using theory of tree diagrams, finding its syntactic patterns by describing the tree diagrams in the form of paragraphs, and concluding the result of analysis.
After analyzing the data, the researcher drew some conclusions that most of the syntactic patterns of surface structure on the English translation of Surah As- Sajadah consist of noun phrase and verb phrase although there are some sentences which only consist of verb phrase or only consist of noun phrase which are completed by adverb phrase. Meanwhile, for the syntactic patterns of deep structure, most of them consist of “Q” symbol in the beginning, since, those are kind of interrogative sentences. Besides, there are also some sentences in the form of imperative sentences as it is symbolized with “imp” symbol in the beginning of patterns. In addition, the researcher suggests to the next researchers who are interested in doing research in the same field to have study in other parts of Syntax. Since this study is still too general, so, the next research can be more specific than the previous researches in which it can enlarge the knowledge dealing with Syntax area.
