Abstract
ABSTRACT
‘Everybody wants to be understood’ is a simple need. People want the other to understand what they say and do or not to do things as the responses. This opinion uses speaker-listener concept which seems not to work properly if the speaker does not speak perfectly, or the listeners cannot understand what the speakers said. This is what happened to the people with speech disorder. Speech disorder happened to those whose normal speeches are disrupted which leads to the difficulty of the listeners to understand, this can be because of a certain disorder or the existence of the other factors.
This study uses descriptive qualitative method since it aims to understand social phenomena. The data are restricted to all the utterances produced only by the main character of Nell movie. It can be sentences, phrases, or words uttered by her. The analysis is done using Carroll’s and Bauman-Waengler’s theory of speech disorder.
The results show that Nell’s (Jodie Foster’s) utterances contain two main types of speech disorder they are fluency disorder and articulation disorder. Articulation disorder dominates almost all the utterances. They contain omission, substitution, distortion, and addition. Moreover, this study finds that even though the main character is physically and mentally healthy, there are factors influencing her speech disorder. She was born as twin, her mother had a story of language disorder since she was an aphasic, and got other input language that is biblical words from which her unique and uncommon words came. The last is that she had her own grammatical pattern for her language. The combination of those all factors plainly explained how these types of speech disorder produced.
The result of this study is recommended to be able to give contribution as an empirical evidence to widen the understanding about the phenomenon of speech disorder to Carroll’s and Bauman-Waengler’s theory. For the next researchers, it is suggested to have a research on a real interaction or communication of children. Since children are spontaneous in speaking, natural and have no deep consideration before delivering their speeches, it may contain more various and complete findings on the types of speech disorder. It will be better if it covers fluency disorder, voice disorder, rhythm disorder and pragmatic disorder.
