Abstract

ABSTRACT

This thesis examines rhetoric strategies used by Soekarno, the first President of Indonesia in the “the fifteenth United Nations General Assembly on September 30, 1960 in New York”. This study aims at (1) finding out which techniques of speeches used by Soekarno, (2) what messages are expressed by him.

Descriptive qualitative design is applied to help analyze the data. Kenneth Burke’s and Aristotle’s theory are used to understand and help analyze the data. The specific data are taken from Soekarno’s speech entitled “To Build the World a New”.

The findings show that Soekarno applies both theories proposed by Burke and Aristotle theories. Based on Burke’s theory, Soekarno applies “pentad” including agent, scene, act, agency and purpose. Following Aristotle theory, Soekarno applies logical appeal, emotional appeal, and ethical appeal.

This study also finds that Soekarno proposes four ideas in his speech in the “the fifteenth United Nations General Assembly on September 30, 1960 in New York”: (1) to support China to become a member of the U.N, (2) to recommend the U.N to adopt the principles of Pancasila in its meeting, (3) to build a peaceful new world, and (4) to recommend the draft of resolution.
