Abstract
ABSTRACT
People always communicate every day because they need each other. Sometimes the communication has a certain purpose. To achieve the purpose, people should apply some ways. One of the ways is being polite during the communication. Politeness can be done not only in behavior, but also through language. It is very important to make the interaction goes well. By being polite, the people can keep the face of themselves and the hearer’s face. The politeness should be appropriate with the culture that exists in a certain society where the people speak. It is because sometimes there is different rule of being polite in every society.
In this research, there are two purposes that the researcher wants to get. The first, describing the kinds of politeness strategy used by an English native speaker teacher named Andrea Norris when she taught English. It observed whether she used independent or involvement strategy when she was teaching English. The second purpose that the researcher wants to get is the way how she uses the politeness strategy. After identifying the kind of politeness strategy used, the researcher analyzes the way she uses the strategy and some factors that influence her to choose a certain strategy. The factors can be the power, distance and weight of imposition. The reason of choosing a certain strategy is also observed by the researcher in order to get a deep understanding of her language, especially her politeness strategy when she taught her students who have different culture from her. This research also discusses the politeness strategy when it is used in cross cultural communication.
Moreover, this research used qualitative method. To get the data, the researcher used two methods, those are observation and interview. When conducting the research, the researcher took some field notes to write the schedule and activity of the research.
Then, the data were analyzed by using two steps, those are explaining the context and analyzing based on the theory. Firstly, the researcher explained the context of the conversation. Then, it was continued by analyzing the data by using Scollon and Scollon’s theory. The researcher also discussed the reason why Andrea Norris chose a certain strategy.
After conducting the research, the researcher got some results. Andrea Norris used politeness strategy when she was teaching English. Both of politeness strategies, involvement and independent strategies were applied by her. The involvement strategies that were used are giving notice to the hearer claims in group membership, optimistic, assume or assert reciprocity, calling nickname, and using hearer’s language. Those were done by her because she wanted to show her closeness and attention to the students that are the hearers. Many involvement strategies were used by her since the hearers at that time were the students which are younger than her. Meanwhile, the independent strategies that were used by her are making minimal assumption about the hearers’ want, being pessimistic, stating a general rule, and using title’s hearers. Those were chosen by her because she wanted to respect the hearers and she did not want to impose them. Moreover, the kind of power is (+P) since they have different status. Then the distance is (-D) because they meet each other almost every week. The last is the weight of imposition that decreases because the use of involvement strategy is high. From the factors, it can be decided that the kind of politeness system is hierarchical politeness system.
Finally, it is hoped for the next researcher to do a research on politeness strategy by using other theories such as from Lakoff. He proposed some principles of being polite that one of the principles is making the hearers feel good. The subject can be in advertisement because when people promote a certain product; they must convince the customer and make them feel good.
