Apology strategies used by Anthony Weiner in his apology press Conference

ABSTRACT

Life in a society needs communication. It is a way to make a good relationship. While doing communication, people will produce some good lexical or grammatical utterances. On the other hand, it is posible on doing slip-up. If it happens, it will hurt others. It means people need to repair or do something to make the relationship safe. Besides, apologizing is another way to ask sorry and respect others.

This research analyzes about the apology strategy used by Anthony Weiner in his apology press conference. The apology strategy is devided into 8 types of apology strategies. They are rejection strategies, minimizing the degree of offense, acknowledgment of responsibility, explanation or account, expression of apology, offer of repair, promise and forbearance and expression concern for hearer.

In order to bring this research into its purpose, the reseacher formulates two problems: (1) What are the types of apology strategy used by Anthony Weiner in his apology press conference? and (2) How apology strategies are used by Anthony Weiner in his apology press conference?

The reseacher used the descriptive qualitative design in doing the research. The data are in the form of words, sentences and utterances produced by Anthony Weiner in his apology press conference. The data were taken from the text of apology conference which was delivered by Weiner from website. From the data sources, the researcher analyzed and investigated apology strategy found in Anthony Weiner text in his apology press conference.

Based on the data, the reseacher found 5 types of apology strategy which are produced by Weiner. Those are rejection, acknowledgment of responsibility, expressions of apology, promise and forbearance, and offer of repair.

Finally, the reseacher suggests to the next reseachers who want to analyze the same topic of this thesis to be more careful in choosing the object of the research and make the research in the same topic but on different aspect, such as taking a research in the real life.
