Abstract
ABSTRACT
Slang is informal language that is more common in speech than in writing and it typically restricted to a particular context or group. The use of slang is growing rapidly than standard language although the standard language is always used in education or formal situation. It is because of the influences of Medias such as magazines, novels, advertising, daily activities and movies. This phenomenon makes researcher interested in researching slang language but he emphasizes to investigate the formation of slang (Morphology). To support this research, researcher deliberately chooses “PAUL” Movie as the source of data of this study, in which this film represents the adventure of alien. The alien lives together with human and always uses slang language in communicating.
In analyzing the data researcher uses qualitative method and chooses the theory of slang formation according Mattiello’s theory as the main theory and another theories as supporting theory such as coinage, proper names, relaxed pronunciation, and ejaculation. Mattiello mentioned that there are fifteen type of slang formation, namely compounding, prefixation, suffixation, final combining form, infixation, conversion, back formation, reduplicatives, acronym and initialism, blending, clipping, elliptic rhying slang, reserved forms, variation and word manufacture and fanciful formation).
But when researcher analyzes the data of this study, researcher found nine types of slang formation that is occurred in “PAUL” Movie. They are compounding (36.43%), suffixation (4.66%), final combining form (0.76%), conversion (5.43%), Acronym & Initialism (18.64%), reduplicatives (3.88%), blending (10.86%), clipping (10.86%) and another word formation (9.30%). Looking at the percentages above, it can be seen that the use of slang compound word is often used in “PAUL” Movie.
