Abstract
ABSTRACT
In good communication, we must avoid certain expressions which assume dissolute which is very inappropriate to be said. But sometimes we are obliged to say those expressions. Then surely we think how to extend those expressions in order not to hurt someone who communicates with us. In language use, there is a common way which is used by people to replace taboo words which are called euphemism. A euphemism is a generally harmless word, name, or phrase that substitutes an offensive or suggestive one. Furthermore, the use of euphemism will be more interesting when it is used for the specific purposes in certain communication. Essentially, the existence of euphemism is used to hide the unpleasant idea, even when the term for them is not necessarily offensive. This characteristic of euphemism is interesting to be analyzed and discussed in order to get deep information or massage behind the word, phrase or sentence which contains of euphemism. It is not only important for certain group of people, but also involves all levels of society to use euphemism to avoid losing face.
This research investigates the types and functions of euphemism used in Yusuf’s English translation of surah Al-Waaqi’ah. The objective of this research is to identify what the types of euphemism and identify the functions of euphemism of the words, phrases and sentences found in the Yusuf’s English translation of surah Al-Waaqi’ah.
This study uses Allan and Burridge theory. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative since the data are collected and analyzed without using statistic formula. The data are gathered from the Yusuf’s English translation of surah Al-Waaqi’ah. The key instrument of this research is the researcher herself. The analysis of the data is conducted continuously through the data reduction, Yusuf’s English translation script are selected then classified in the certain categories, and those are types and function. And the last is drawing conclusion based on research findings.
As the result, the researcher finds that the main findings of this thesis are the researcher finds four types of euphemism: metaphor, idiom, hyperbole and circumlocution. Second, the researcher finds three functions of euphemism: to inform (conveys new information), to evaluate (conveys writer’s opinion or attitude and to moralize (conveys writer’s attitude toward the truth-value of her/his utterance or writing).
