Abstract
ABSTRACT
Expressive language disorder is the difficulty in expressing thought verbally which can be in form of phonological, semantical, pragmatical, and syntactical disorders. It is being acquired occurring as a result of brain damage or injury such as in autistic. Here, in I Am Sam movie there are many phenomena of expressive language disorder found which belongs to the characteristics and types of expressive language disorder. By viewing that description, this study is conducted to dig more about expressive language disorder of the autistic in I Am Sam movie. Moreover, it investigates the characteristics of expressive language disorder according to Clark and Khamhi’s schema (2011) and the types of expressive language disorder according to Carroll’s theory (1985).
Furthermore, this study used descriptive qualitative design because it is describing the phenomena by focusing on the production of expressive language disorder. Here, the data are obtained from the utterance in the script of I Am Sam movie in the form of words, phrases, and sentence. In getting validity of the data in this study, after collecting the data, the writer confirm the script while watching the movie, then picking up the data by classifying the data based on the characteristics and types of expressive language disorder.
Reviewing the theory used in this study, there are five characteristics of expressive language disorder and four types of expressive language disorder found. Resuming the finding of this study, Sam faces five of six characteristics of expressive language disorder, namely weak vocabulary skills, word finding difficulties, word omission, difficulty providing information and poor narrative skills. Afterward, overall types of expressive language disorder, namely phonological, semantic, pragmatic, and syntax also can be proved and analyzed well in this study.
Finally, recommendation is addressed to the next researcher to develop this study to be more various by doing research in the real expressive language disorder of autism especially in the children, because the language used in the children is less various than adult. Also, what will happen in the real subject cannot be predicted like in the movie. Likewise, I Am Sam movie is a good reflection of expressive language disorder because Sean Penn was successful in characterizing Sam as the autistic with appropriate language expression. Thus, this study is a good reference for those who want to study more about expressive language disorder of autism.
