Politeness strategies used by the main character in Ice Princess movie

ABSTRACT

In daily conversation, politeness strategies are important to build a harmonious relationship in social life. We have to keep our way to speak when we communicate with other people in order to get successful communication and reach our goal to make the hearer understand and also make them stay to focus on the speaker. The movie describes the real social life as it is influenced by the social and cultural values. Considering the importance of politeness strategies in a conversation, here the researcher wanted to find out the politeness strategies used by Casey, the main characters in movie entitled “Ice Princess”.

This research is designed in descriptive qualitative because the data were the utterances of Casey, the main characters of “Ice Princess” movie, which contain politeness strategies. The approach for analyzing the politeness strategies is based on the Scollon and Scollon’s Theory of Politeness which has some steps of data collections, those are collecting the data by watching the “Ice Princess” movie, then selecting each utterance based on the type of politeness strategies. To analyze the data, the researcher identified and classified data based on Scollon and Scollon’s theory of politeness, involvement and independence strategies. Second, describing the data from each category of Scollon and Scollon’s theory. Finally, concluding the whole data analyzed.

As the result, the researcher found out that Casey used two kinds of strategies based on Scollon and Scollon’s Concept of Politeness, they are involvement and independence strategies. There were thirty eight politeness strategies used by Casey: fifteen involvement strategies which consist of notice and attend to hearer, exaggerate when said to the hearer, and giving voluble and twenty three independence strategies which consist of showing apology, being pessimistic, using the hearer’s nicknames, and minimizing threat to the interlocutor, etc.

Since this study only discusses about the main characters in using politeness strategies, so the researcher suggests to the next researchers to conduct further researches and use various characters, not only the main characters of the movie.
