Abstract
ABSTRACT
Politeness is used by individual to build harmony and to get successful communication. We use the politeness strategy to reach our wants and goals, or to avoid conflict with others by maintaining other’s face. For running a well and smooth communication, there are four kinds of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) which should be fulfilled by the individual: those are (1) bald on record, (2) positive politeness, (3) negative politeness, and (4) off record strategies. This study is aimed at finding out politeness strategies of Alan Jones’s interview in 2GB radio in interviewing Julia Gillard.
This study is descriptive qualitative. The researcher collects the data by downloading the radio record, listening to the radio record for several times and understanding of the situation in the conversation, making the script of the radio record, and then confirming it with the radio record, reading the script closely in order to understand the text, and the last, taking some notes of the words, phrases and sentences as the potential data related to the politeness strategies that are used by Alan Jones. The researcher analyzes the data by identifying, determining, and classifying them based on Brown and Levinson’s theory, and by describing, discussing and concluding the finding.
The findings show that Jones uses four kinds of politeness strategies as being proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987), namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record. The possibly reason of using bald on record is because Jones does not have effort to minimize the impact of the FTA’s. Jones has little concern to Gillard’s face. Thus he makes her shocked, embarrassed, and uncomfortable. Positive politeness is used because he wants to satisfy and to be friendly with Gillard. Negative politeness is used because he considers the formal condition and his position to save his face and his statement. Off record strategy is used by Jones to avoid responsibility for doing FTA to Gillard. Jones conveys something that has other meaning to make Gillard realizing his intention.
Since this study focuses to analyze and describe politeness strategies used by interviewer in a radio talk using Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987), the writer suggests the further researchers to analyze politeness in social factors using other references such as proposed by Scollon and Scollon (1995), and Yule (1996). The next researcher can investigate politeness strategies related to the communication in the real situation in other forms such as comedian in standup comedy, football presenter, and talk show presenter. Thus it will be more challenging to investigate.
