Abstract
ABSTRACT
Men and women have different language style. Linguistically, the difference may be accentutaed by beliefe in what women and men should sound like when they are talking. By the language used by women, it can show the characteristic of women for instance avoiding direct and forceful statements, and conveying on conforms that express hesitation and uncertainty. Women’s language has a foundation to show attitude which reflects women is marginal subject to the serious concern of life. Then this study focuses on analyzing women’s language features used by the main character of “Morning Glory” movie.
Based on the problem of the study, the objectives of this study are to find out what kind of women speech’s features used by the main character in Morning Glory movie and how women’s language features is used in her communication. By this aim we will know what kind of language features used by women nowadays in this modern era.
It is a sociolinguistic study that focuses on language and gender. This study is conducted using descriptive qualitative method. The data are collected in non numerical forms, in the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences. The discussion are in the form of explanation about the finding. The data source is a movie entitled Morning Glory. While the data will be obtained in the form of words, phrases and sentences that is produced by Becky Fuller, the main character in the Morning Glory movie. Then it is analyzed based on the Lakoff’s theory of women’s speech features.
The findings of this research showed that the main characters of Morning Glory movie used women’s speech features which reflect lack of confidence. It is because women tend to have trouble in starting the conversation and avoiding saying something definite related to their statement. The finding also illustrates that she is subordinate object because she is underestimated could not work as well to make a great development for the rate of he career. The novelty in this study is that the woman also brake the rule of women’s language feature by saying expletives or strong swear words to convery her feeling. Then she also use direct command to make a gerat decicion. This is in contrary with the theory since women should avoid using strong swear words and should not use direct command.
