Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language in its relational functions can be employed as a powerful device to dominate or control over others. In its practice, it involves the process of manipulation. For instance, to organize number of people into one government system, a leader needs to shape an ideology to unite them in which language comes as an instrument to reach. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as an established paradigm in linguistics takes a particular interest in the so-called relation between language and power. It aims at investigating critically power, domination, and social inequalities as expressed in discourse. Thus, CDA comes as a study to explore social inequal issues such as gender inequality, racism, manipulation, domination, and so forth implied in text. This thesis is an attempt to explain the research problems how Pope Benedict XVI, the religious leader of Christian community, employs the rhetorical strategy in his speech delivered to his own community. The researcher decides to choose his speech in the pilgrimage from the Diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva Delle Fonti, Italy in 2011.
To answer the problems, the researcher employs descriptive qualitative study as her research design. Methodologically, the researcher uses van Dijk’s CDA framework of discursive strategy of interaction (positive self-representation & negative other-representation) through interaction strategy, lexicon, rhetorical figures as well as local syntax aspects.
The findings reveal that Pope Benedict XVI dominantly employs rhetorical strategies of polarization, authority, norm expression, and a few of empathy, actor description, consensus, and disclaimer; more rhetorical strategies of euphemism and hyperbole that are mostly constructed in active voice pattern and then enhanced by certain lexical choices that lead to bear a formal distance with the audience. Those rhetorical strategies are used to strengthen the in-group’s stance and their ideologies, and to show the superiority of the in-group while on the other hand, lexicon, rhetorical figures, as well as local syntax are employed to enhance the cohesion, coherence and semantic meaning of the whole text as well. Overall, this study has proven that some discursive strategies have been effectively exploited to materialize the ideological manipulation of shaping positive self-representation.
The researcher suggests the next researchers to focus on discussing common and effective tactics revealed in the present study such as polarization, authority, and norm expression and explore more than one data source on different objects such as mass media discourse to get different dimension of analysis.
