Abstract
ABSTRACT
Discussing associative meaning is the way to understand the words, phrases, or sentences which are used to convey different meaning in our daily communication; spoken and written form. It is very important to study meaning, in which the hearers and readers are able to understand what the speaker and writer mean.
Meaning is the idea or concept that can be transferred from the mind of the speaker to the mind of the hearers by embodying them as it is in the form of language or another. Associative meaning is unstable of meaning and has variants of individual experience. In this research, those variants of associative meaning are applied in the headlines of The Jakarta Post newspaper. It is one of English mass media in daily life. This research obtained the data from internet, especially in the official website of The Jakarta Post (http//:thejakartapost.com).
This research aims at analyzing associative meaning in written text. The researcher determines the five types and the use of associative meaning that are applied in the headlines of The Jakarta Post. The headlines were published on August until September 2011.
A descriptive qualitative method is used to give comprehensive descriptions and discover the types and the use of associative meaning in the headlines. This approach is used to arrive at a rich description of words, phrases or sentences in the headlines of The Jakarta Post that needs to find the answer based on the research focuses.
In this analysis the researcher presents five types of associative meaning that is used in the headlines of The Jakarta Post, such as connotative meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and collocative meaning. Besides, this analysis shows that the associative meaning is used by bringing the experience and expressions of human thought and feeling or emotion of word in the headlines of Time magazine.
The results of this research show that there are five types of associative meaning and its use that occurs in those headlines of The Jakarta Post during August - September 2011. Each of types shows the various forms of sentence and give their own definitions based on what the type is talked about. In this period, reflected meaning is often used than other meanings which are in the form of words. While the affective meaning is rarely used.
Finally, the researcher hopes that this analysis gives advantages to the next researchers as their references or as data supporting. Based on the above findings, it is suggested to the next researchers to fill the gap by continuing this research to study more accurately.
