Abstract
ABSTRACT
In this recent time, there are some newspapers which still use euphemism to report their news although usage of euphemism is forbidden by government. It is used to replace impolite, taboo, unpleasant and harsh language with politeness and favorable language that occurs in society. Besides, it is used to reinforce social relationship, avoid embarrassment, and cover up and shift guilt and crime. Therefore, euphemism can give positive and negative effect.
The objectives of this study are to find out and describe the types of euphemistic expression. Apart from that, it also explains reason usage of euphemistic expression in the Jakarta Post edition of July 1st - 31st 2011.
The main instrument of this research is the researcher himself. Data analysis was conducted continuously through the data reduction in fields of life in The Jakarta Post. Then, the researcher selected content of the newspaper such as politics, religion, social, economy-business, sport, education (science-technology), health-medical, and military. However, in this study, the euphemism was only found in politics, economy-business, social, law, health-medical, and sport. After that, the researcher divided them into types of euphemism and gave reason of euphemism usage. The last, the researcher concluded it based on the finding.
In this research, the researcher found 31 data related to euphemism. They were from in six areas: politics, economy-business, social, law, sport, and health- medical. From the six articles, they comprised three categories: semantic innovation, word formation process, and additional types. Furthermore, the semantic innovation comprised some types: metaphor, particularization, hyperbole, implication, and metonymy; word formation process comprised compounding, and derivation; and, the additional type was only circumlocution.
Finally, from the result of analysis, the researcher hopes and suggests for further researchers to conduct a research in oral language (movie, or speech) rather than written language (newspaper or magazine) because the oral language has not been yet analyzed by other researchers. Because of that, it will have novelty in state of the art of a research.
