Code switching used by the Teacher at BEC (Basic English Course) Pare, Kediri

ABSTRACT

This study examines the reasons for code switching used by teacher at BEC in Pare, Kediri. This study is based on the collection and analysis of recording of conversational data. In this context, code switching is examined to understand why the teacher used code switching and what types of code switching occurred. This study draws on sociolinguistics perspective to analyze the data, including the situational and metaphorical approaches (Blom & Gumperz, 1972) and the type of code switching Romaine, 1995).

The majority of BEC students and teachers are Javanese and Indonesian speaking people, but the teachers and students used English to communicate with others in their communication. Therefore, when the teacher gave explanation, the teachers tended to switch from one language to another one. The reason for doing this was to give clearer explanation. Although, the students were from different places and social backgrounds, but when they were studying at BEC they had to use English as their daily conversation.

This study is a descriptive qualitative research because it did not deal with number at all. To collect the data, this study employed observation, recording, and taking a note. This research was done to (1) identify types of code switching used by teachers Training Class at BEC (Basic English Course) in Pare, Kediri, and (2) the reasons why the teacher used code switching in Training Class at Basic English course in Pare Kediri?

This study found three types of code switching: tag switching, internal code switching, and external code switching as well as situational and metaphorical code switching. The codes were used in different situation, e.g.: from formal to informal, to make the statements more understandable, giving clearer information, and giving advice. From the data that the researcher found there are some reasons that influence the switch from one language to another: Indonesian language, Arabic language and English language.

It is suggested for future researchers to examine code switching not only in formal situation but also in informal situation. Other domains of investigation may also be useful to consider in a research on code switching because code switching is linguistic phenomenon occurred in the society.
