Abstract
ABSTRACT
The process of English language teaching and learning mainly happened in the classroom. Classroom is the main place where students are frequently exposed to the target language. In teaching and learning interaction, teacher not only uses the first language but also the target language. The language used by the teacher for instruction in the classroom is known as teacher talk (TT), is often used by teachers for communicate when they are in the process of teaching and stimulate students’ response. An action that is performed by teacher talk as speech acts means an act of communication that is showed when saying something generally do something. Speech acts are used to analyze language phenomena. This phenomena is also found in the classroom interaction. Hence, the researcher chooses Senior High School 1 Batu as field study because the language that is used by the teacher expresses action that will stimulate students to do something.
This study has two research questions that will be answered by researcher, they are what are the characteristics of speech acts used by an English teacher in the State Senior High School 1 Batu? And what are the functions of speech acts performed by the English teacher? This study used descriptive qualitative method to portray and clarify speech acts used by an English teacher in the State Senior High School 1 Batu. The data of this research are taken from classroom interaction. For analyzing the data, the researcher has to identify context of every teacher’s utterance. Then, the data are also identified the characteristics of speech acts that is performed by the types felicity conditions to show the appropriateness of condition when speaker says an utterance and the types of speech acts to find out locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act.
From the analysis, the researcher finds the characteristics of the data that are fulfilled analyzed using types of felicity conditions. Then, the data are also succeeded analyzed using types of speech acts and find locutionary act namely imperative, declarative, interrogative and exclamatory meaning; illocutionary such as directives, representatives or assertive, expressive and commissive. The declarative act does not find because the teacher’s utterances do not change the special institution of the students. After that, the functions of speech acts in the teacher talk are requesting, asking, suggesting, commanding, and warning.
The reseacher suggests the next reseacher to investigate other objects that may use declarative act because the researcher does not find this act of the data. It can give contribution to the next reseachers.
