Abstract
ABSTRACT
Discourse analysis is the study about the language usage in the social context. The language usage for communication in the conversation constitutes social context that become the concern of discourse analysis. Conversational implicature is the inferences about the purpose of the speaker utterances. When the speaker says something, it has the certain purpose with the words that is said. This study focuses on investigating the conversational implicature in the audience comments of Agnes Monica songs. This study aimed to reveal the purpose of the commenter’s utterances in the way how to give the comments.
This study is an attempt to explain the research problems of audience comments in using the kinds of conversational implicature for Agnes Monica song. This study is also focuses on finding the way how the implicature applied by the commenters.
This research is designed using the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by choosing and finding the kinds of conversational implicature. The researcher analyzed the data using Grice’s theories about the kinds of conversational implicature which are categorized into conventional implicature, particularized conversational implicature, and scalar implicature.
The findings reveal that the commenters used some kind of conversational implicature to give the comments: (1) Conventional Implicature, there are some words of ‘but’ to express contrast that Agnes Monica as copycat and Agnes Monica as herself. (2) Particularized Conversational Implicature, the commenter carries the implied meaning when they are uttered. (3) Scalar Implicature, the commenters used some kind of scale word. The way how the commenters used implicature in the audience comments is dominant using the maxim of relation.
