The Social and Cultural Context in Viewpoint of The Bible Awake Magazine

ABSTRACT

Genre is communicative event, iIt could be academic lecturing or even only gossiping (daily or casual communication). The way we use language in a particular genre also depends on whether the text is written or spoken, and the social and cultural context in which the genre occurs. There are two objectives of the study; (1) How the social and cultural context in the viewpoint of Bible in Awake magazine? (2) How does public opinion in viewpoint of Bible in Awake magazine reflected social and culture of New York people? This research uses qualitative design.

The researcher takes the data from the interaction on the viewpoint of Bible in a magazine. There are five phases in analyzing data. First is identifying the setting of data. Second is determining focus of the text. Third is deciding the purpose of the data. After that is distinguishing the extended audience of the text and the relation with the writer. The last phase is equating the expectation and the requirement of the text.

There are some stages in identifying the social and cultural context of an article. (1) identifyin the setting of the text, (2) determining the focus of the text, (3) deciding the purpose of the text, (4) distinguishing the extended audience of the text and the relation with the reader, (5) equetin the expectations and requirements of the text.

The setting of the article designs in applied, pure and convergent style. The focus of the article is convergent. There are some purposes on the article, such as to gain reader awareness, to convince the reader, etc. Next, the audience of the article is everyone who reads the article. The last, the expectations or requirements of the article shows from the literary quality, grammar accuracy, etc. The social and cultural context that is reflected in the article is the simple dictions, New York people tend to focus on a topic in writing, New York people prefer to organize the content well, to explain clearly, have good grammar accuracy and give more attention on the literary quality in writing.
