Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research investigate stance taking used in Michelle Malkin’s blog. The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds of stance taking and the function of stance taking used in Michelle Malkin’s blog.
This research uses descriptive qualitative approach, because this study analyse about the phenomenon of talk in the social interaction. The data are collected from Malkin’s blogger which contain many kinds of political issues in the US. The theory used to analyse in theory of Grek Myers about discourse of blogs and wikis.
The result of this study shows that there are kinds of stance taking in the Michelle Malkin’s Blog. They are epistemic, attitudinal and stylistic. Epistemic is the most dominant type in the Michelle Malkin’s blog. The functions of Epistemic are marking the certainty and uncertainty about the factual basis for statement, marking the ability and inability, and give the advice. Then attitudinal is less dominant type of stance taking which is focus on moral judgement and emotional response of the writer, and then stylistic is marker of the style of writer when give their statment. The functions of stance taking used based on the grammar perspective are; (1). To mark the certainty of Malkin’s as the blogger for giving her oipinion {marker of epistemic}. (2). to interpret moral judgment of Malkin as the blogger, {marker of attitudinal}. (3). to influence the reader with give the strong statement for the reader {marker of stylistic}. (4) to mark ability or inability {marker of epitemic} and (5) to give the advice for the reader {marker of epistemic}.In addition, the grammar used in Michelle Malkin’s blog based on kinds of stance-taking, including; (1) Modal verbs {may, should, can, cannot, would, wouldn’t, might, will}, (2). Adverbial {ever}, (3). Premodifying adverb {just}. (4). Verb plus clause complement {As, Think}, (5). Conjunction {If}, (6). Adjective {possible}.
Since the findings of this study have not discussed about reported speech, which investigate about writer’s stance base on structures that go beyond the clause, and rely on the reader’s sense of how language used in context, finally the researcher suggest to the next reseacher to conduct further research and use another aspect of stance taking to get more various function of stance taking used in public act.
