Language Style of the main characters in Mean Girl Movie

ABSTRACT

Language style is significant part in communication to avoid misunderstanding among people. It is the fact that people may use various styles in expressing their feelings, ideas and in conveying message to others. One’s feeling and thought will be expressed in accordance with his own way and manner. Interaction will not occur properly if someone does not speak with the right style. In this case, the ways of the characters use their language in the movie can be investigated from the characteristics of language styles to show styles of formality, informality, colloquially and etc. Such as happens in the characters of “Mean Girl Movie” since they produces various ways of their language styles in the movie. Thus, the use of language style in the movie nowadays becomes more remarkable to be analyzed.

This research focuses on analyzing types of Language style and the factors which is influence the language style used by the characters in “Mean Girl Movie”. This study applies descriptive qualitative method in finding language style and the factor which influence it, those are used by the movie characters based on Joss theory, Kirsnar and Mandell’ theory. Then, the researcher analyzed the data and also discussed by using these theory.

The finding shows there eight kinds of language style there are Frozen Style, Formal Style, Consultative Style, Casual Style, Intimate Style, Informal Style, Colloquial Style, and Slang Style. Moreover, it is also show the seven factors which influence someone’s style of language. Furthermore, everyone have a different language style because it was influence by the some factor, such as: the kind of occasions, various social, age, the differences that exist between the participants, the particular task that is involved, emotional involvement, gender.

The researcher has some suggestions for the next researcher. She recommends the next researcher to use the data from the real life, such as the political debate, the speech of president or proselytizer, or in daily communication, such as in the market, party, school, etc. and to use other theories which deal with the study.
