Abstract
ABSTRACT
Theory of Thomas Huckin, in this research, is used in doing Critical Discourse Analysis in which six aspects of text level analysis are used. Doing analysis, the researcher analyzes the texts as a whole, then looking at the sentences, and the words. The aspects of text level analysis include: (1) omission, (2) framing, (3) foregrounding, (4) backgrounding, (5) genre and (6) presupposition Huckin (1997). Those used in analyzing Agnes utterances since many controversies occur about whether she is arrogant or showing her good ambition to motivate other young generation.
Methodologically, the qualitative research is used as the research design. The data are collected by intentionally making the scripts of the videos of the speech and the interview of Agnes Monica, then reading the whole full-body of each script. After that, it is noted the utterances being assumed as carrying ideology of adopting “ambition”, and proving those all data using theory of Thomas Huckin.
The data analysis from two scripts proves that Agnes Monica’ utterances in her speech and interview with Dalton Tanonaka carry ideology of adopting “ambition” in gaining success. It is proved through analysis using omission, framing, foregrounding, backgrounding, genre and presupposition. The utterances deliver something about strong desire, mindset of being the best, and struggle that are appropriate with the characteristic of ambition relating to the good tendency (good ambition) based on classification of good ambition and bad ambition. Furthermore, mostly data use utterances of motivation rather than just telling Agnes’ experience in purpose (ambition in good order without being rude in achieving the dream) by which audiences or scripts readers can raise their enthusiasm.
The researcher suggests the next researcher to use all possible aspects of the theory concerning with broader text level. Therefore it is expected that the next researcher can use Microscopic Levels Analysis and Macroscopic Levels Analysis based on Huckin (2002), and provide completed information about application of the theory. Besides, to the audiences of Agnes videos to first look at the thing that is framed, foregrounded, presupposed, and even the genre. Those utterances reflect her mindset rather than just telling other people’s career.
