Flouting and Hedging Maxims used by the main characters in Titanic Movie

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on analyzing Flouting and Hedging Maxims of conversation maxims spoken by the main characters in Titanic movie. Maxims are the rules which is introduced by Paul Grice (1975); Cooperative Principle; Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Relevance and Maxim of Manner. These maxims are used in the conversation. If the people make conversation they often disobey the maxims overtly (Flouting the Maxims) and sometimes disobey secretly (Hedging the maxims). The characters (players) especially in this movie often flout ad hedge the conversation. Titanic is one of the historical movie which never taken.

This research was conducted using qualitative research based on the theories, specifically in Cooperative Principle. This research uses a qualitative method because the data are informative dealing with the utterances related to flouting and hedging of the maxims in “Titanic” movie. It is qualitative because this research does not deal with the hypothesis and numbering.

Data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated in problem of the study. The maxims could be flouted in hedged by all speakers. There are two kinds of flouting of maxim occurring in Titanic movie: (1) maxim of relevance and (2) maxim of quantity. On the other hand, there are three kinds of hedging of maxim occur in Titanic movie: (1) maxim of quantity, (2) maxim of relevance.

Based on the data finding, discussion and analysis, it is suggested for the next researchers who want to conduct a study in the same field to use another subject which is historical movie or others relevant object which is made in Indonesia. It can make enrich knowledge in Indonesia.
