Sequence and structure of Bill O’reilly and Barack Obama in Fox News interview

ABSTRACT

Conversation analysis (CA) as the part of discourse analysis becomes interesting to study. It shows the way language joins the social life, the way people together and interact each other. Conversation analysis examines how spoken discourse constructed and the way the speaker take a part of conversation (Paltridge,2006). This thesis explains the research problem what are the sequence and structure use by Bill O’reilly and President Obama in “Fox News” and how sequence and the structure applied in the news interview between the Bill O’rielly and Barack Obama in “Fox News” in 02 January 2014.

The researcher uses Paltridge (2006) approach to answer the research questions.. Sequence and the structure are opening and closing, turn taking, adjacency pair, feedback and conversational repair. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative study because describe the sequence and structure in news interview.

The finding reveals that Bill O’rielly and Barack Obama use sequence and structure in the news interview. The sequence and structure are opening, closing; turn taking, preference organization, feedback and repair. In the opening and closing use the same expression, in the turn taking use overlap, question, continuing other participant and multiple turn. Adjacency pair uses pair greeting, farewell, question, summon-answer and telling accept. Feedback use token “ok, yes” and falling intonation. In repair use self-initiated self-repair.
