A Vague Language in main character of Life of PI Movie 2012

ABSTRACT

In daily language vague language became a central feature of spoken and written. Human being used language to express feeling, respond, phenomena and share idea. From that, it is understood that vague language has a significant role in doing communication. Using vague language can create wrong meaning in the reader’s mind, it draws on how the writer state a general idea but leave the precise meaning to the reader. Therefore, this research is conducted due to the fact that phenomena of vague language often happen in conversation specifically when the language is used in informal situation.

To answer the research problems, the researcher adopts some theoretical viewpoints on the field of vague language including category and function based on Channel 1994 Theory. The researcher applies a qualitative descriptive study in her research design. The data are in the forms of utterances and words which contained vague language in the main character of Life of PI movie 2012.

The finding shows that vague language often used, there are 26 data transcripts classified by the researcher from the utterance of main character. Three kinds of vague language category they are Vague Additives to Numbers, Vague Language by Choice of Vague Words or Phrases and Vague Language by Scalar Implicature is used in this research. Then, the dominant type of vague language is scalar implicature. Moreover, it also shows the seven functions in using vague language in the conversation. Furthermore, every category have both different and same function because vague language in the sentence depend on text and context and it also shows interchange category and function in developing the arguments.

It is suggested for the next researchers to explore more on vague language such as vague language additive to number with discourse approach etc. In addition, it is expected to explore more in another language such as debate contest, speech contest, and seminar by giving new approach to analysis. Hence, it will enrich the data base of vague language.
