Politeness strategies used by the main character in Door to Door Movie 2002

ABSTRACT

In everyday life, people always do conversations to communicate each other. People need a politeness strategy to build a harmonious relationship towards others that is ethical communicate politely. In this case, a politeness strategy is one of the topics of pragmatic. It disciplines the study of communication ethics which is good and true in every word as well as actions. Politeness phenomenon is not only happening in the real world, but also in the movies when the characters are interacting with each other. Therefore, the writer decided to choose the movie “Door to Door” in investigating the existence of politeness strategies used by the main character.

This study aims to determine the use of politeness strategies in the “Door to Door” movie. In addition, this study was designed to determine the type of politeness strategies and the main reason why the main character uses politeness strategies when he expresses his opinion to achieve his wish. The study was a descriptive qualitative because the data were collected, analyzed and described in the form of words rather than numeric values or statistics. The data from this study are the utterances, which contains the politeness strategies used by Bill Porter. The writer also uses the script of this movie from the internet.

The results of this study indicate that, Bill Porter, as the main character uses two kinds of politeness strategies proposed by Scollon and Wong Scollon (2001) to express his opinion. They are involvement strategy and independence strategy. Here, the speaker as the main character uses strategy involvement when the speaker wants to show the close relationship with the hearer. Meanwhile, the main character uses independence strategy when he wants to appreciate other persons. Politeness strategies mostly used by the main character in this story is the involvement strategy, for instance notice to attend to the hearer and exaggerate.

This study is expected to be useful for further researchers who want to investigate deeply in the same field with this study. For the further researchers, they are advised to choose a different field of research and theories, in order to enrich the field of study and investigation. It is also expected to learn about the study of politeness strategies involving other language, not only in English. Therefore, it can expand knowledge in applying linguistic aspects in different languages.
