Abstract
ABSTRACT
Discrimination is a social fact that is often found in the society, caused by the human being inclination to discriminate the others. Discrimination is treating people not same with the other people, in which this treatment is made based on the characteristic which has been represented by that people. Discrimination can occur when a person is prejudged on their appearance or background, without taking into consideration their capabilities or potential.
Related to the phenomenon above, this study is aimed at describing kinds of discrimination experienced by the Irish immigrants in America described in the novel The Element of Fire by Brendan Graham, and the discrimination happened in the novel reflect the real condition of Irish Immigrant in America in that time.
Brendan Graham’s The Element of Fire tells about discrimination that happened on the main character named Ellen, the Irish immigrant. She brings her children to move to America to get better life but it is not same as her dream of America. Ellen and her children always get discrimination action such as when she want to open new business in America but no one help her to be her business partner because she is Irish. There are stereotypes of the Irish itself, such as the Irish are fighter, pauper, diseased, drunkard and many more. Besides that, Catholic as they religion also is one of the reason why they always get such a bad treatment and harm discrimination action.
In this research, the researcher uses the sociological approach that is viewed as the proper approach to do the study. As it is known that sociological approach is one kind of literary criticism which studies the novel and values it and has the basic assumption which says that the existence of literary work is not in an empty social background. And the purpose of it is to find the relationship between literary work and the condition of the society from many aspects.
After analyzing the data, the researcher finds several points. First, there are two kinds of discrimination happened to Irish immigrants in America based on the novel The Element of Fire by Brendan Graham. They are racial discrimination and religious discrimination. Racial discrimination is treating someone because of their racial background. While, religious discrimination is treating someone because of their belief/religion. Second, the story in Brendan Graham’s The Element of Fire reflects the real condition of Irish immigrants in America.
