Abstract
ABSTRACT
Thematic progression is a prominent aspect in the study of Systemic Functional Linguistics as it aims at creating cohesive and coherence text. It is established by patterning Theme and Rheme which provide the information of the text. Furthermore, this study focuses on investigating a pattern of thematic progression which is split rheme in the novel “The Hunger Games”. The purpose of this study is to reveal the pattern of thematic progression which emerges in the novel.
To analyze the study, the researcher takes descriptive qualitative method in which the data and the result are analyzed descriptively and qualitatively rather that a numeric analysis. Moreover, as the data are too broad, the researcher reduces the data by taking twenty six paragraphs as the sample. Besides, the data is analyzed into two major which are analyzed by the types of theme and split rheme pattern of Thematic Progression.
Furthermore, the finding of the study results that there are three types of theme which exist in novel “The Hunger Games”, they are: topical theme, interpersonal theme, and textual theme. It also finds that the commonest type of theme which is used is topical theme, the second position is textual theme and the last position is interpersonal theme. The second finding results that the frequency of split rheme pattern is rare in novel “The Hunger Games”. The pattern only appears in nine paragraphs of sixty six paragraphs which are analyzed.
The researcher recommends to the next researchers which are interested in investigating thematic progression to conduct further research in the study of thematic progression which is related to the study of cross culture in the other kinds of text, such as expository and descriptive text.
