Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the complaint and apology used by Tony Abbott and the Indonesian Government in the case of spying. Complaint means that the act performs by the speaker in expressing “displeasure, annoyance, blame, threats or reprimand” as a reaction to a past or on-going action. Apology means that the act performs by the speaker in asking forgiveness or an action which intended to “set things right”.
Complaints strategies are classified into four types, the first is “no explicit reproach”, the second is “expression of annoyance and disapproval”, the third is “accusation”, and the fourth is “blame”.
Apology strategies are classified into five types, the first is “opting out”, the second is “evasive strategies”, the third is indirect apologies”. The fourth is “direct apologies”, the fifth is “remedial support”.
Study on analysis of complaint and apology is closely related to human communication that is why the design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. It tries to describe, identify, and classify the strategies of complaint and apology used by Tony Abbott and the Indonesian Government.
This study found that there are 16 complaints and 6 apologies strategy are identified, which is used by Tony Abbott and the Indonesian government. Then, the findings of this study are hoped to give valuable inputs for (1) English students of UIN Malang who are going to use the complaint and apology in the next research (2) the result of this study can be used as a consideration in choosing the area of sociolinguistic value on the politic case happen. For other readers, it gives deeper understanding on complaint and apology strategy occurs in every context.
