Abstract

ABSTRACT

Discourse analysis is a discipline in the linguistic area which focuses on investigating the relationship between language and social context. Identity aspect reflected in language use is one of issues that become the concern of Discourse Analysis. Identity can be built through the language use, interactional setting and the society which use in different context. Discourse and identity is to explore the discourse in a range of social context and how the social aspect can help to shape our identities. Besides, it also considers how views of the world and identities are constructed through the use of discourse. Furthermore, this study focuses on investigating identity in the movie “Man of Steel”. This study aimed to reveal the identity that emerges in the movie.

Answering the research problems the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing this movie the researcher used Blommaert theory of discourse and identity is „who and what you are‟ is dependent on context, occasion, and purpose. The way of analyzing the utterances of the characters is by reading movie script and deciding the data that will be analyzed. The finding found that there are some identities that are portrayed on the language, those are; identity as a teacher, student, un-usual people, journalist, parents, doctor, and manager. In addition it is important to know people identity through the narrative describing that provide by the narrator because stories were often used by the conversationalist to construct or re- inforce a particular kind of gendered identity for the narrator.

In last, the researcher recommends to the next researchers which are interested in investigating discourse and identity to conduct further research in the study of discourse and identity which is related to the study of cross culture is the other kinds of field of study such as in the fiction.
