The Conflict Experienced by the main character reflected in Orhan Pamuk’s Snow

ABSTRACT

Psychoanalysis is defined as the study that analyzes the human psyche in the literary work. By psychoanalytic criticism, the researcher can analyze the psyche of the author, the character of the literary work, and the reader psyche. Further, in this research I intend to analyze the conflict experienced by the main character in Orhan Pamuk’s Snow, Kerim Alakusoglu.

This study is aimed a finding: (1) the kinds of conflict experienced by the main character, Ka in Orhan Pamuk’s Snow (2) the causes of conflict appear in the novel (3) and the way the main character solves the conflict. This study is theoretically expected to give the analysis and information in obvious description about the conflict toward the main characer in view of psychological conflicts. Besides, the finding of this study is also expected to be beneficial as the scientific material for further study on the same work.

This study is using literary criticism, focuses on psychoanalysis approach under Sigmund Freud and Maslow’s Human Needs. The research method of this study is taking the data from the primary source, Orhan Pamuk’ Snow.

Through the analysis of this study, the researcher finds out that Ka experiences a lot of kinds of conflict during his existence in Kars. Kars is the small town in Turkish Republic has the significant issues; the municipal election and the suicide epidemic. Therefore, it makes the conflict appear toward Ka. Turkish Republic as the secular state has Islam as the majority of the religion. Further, the controversy and the conflict can be avoided. The contestation between Islamist and secularists has the big affection toward Ka. In summary, the researcher also mentions the main character’s effort in solving the conflict toward him is accurately showed in the analysis.
