Abstract

ABSTRACT

Identity is a central organizing characteristic of our social world. We can see the identity of the social spoken or written in the social performance.This study explains how the characters’ identity (Captain Phillips, pirates and Navy SEAL) through their self-identity and social relationship. The researcher focuses of the study how the identities are employed by characters in “Captain Phillips” movie.

The data collection of this study uses Bloommaert’s theory to analyze identities employed by characters in this movie. The data take from language style through the expression and utterances in the movie script.In this research, identity elaborated in context of movie through the language style and self-identity of the characters.

The findings explain that the characters identity can be seen from self- identity, social relationship, semiotic potential, space and place. For example, Captain Phillips’ identity is a good Captain who leads his team when they got piracy. He can shows identity through language style. On the other hand, pirates and Navy SEAL show their identity through their expression and utterances in movie script. It means that people display identities is included in the way they use language and the way they interact with other people.

Based on this study, it can be concluded that style does not give full meaning of identity without existence of language. Further, the researcher expects this study will be useful for the next researchers who are interested in doing similar research.
