Abstract
ABSTRACT
Identity is an identification of someone or something that has specific characteristics. Identity is not only display that a person is but also how a person wants people to see him or her. It may help other people to inform who or what somebody or something is. To show the identity of something or somebody, people may have characteristic of linguistic and social variables associated with them. This study analyzes the identity of characters in “Java Heat” film based on discourse analysis perspective proposed by Paltridge (2006). The researcher chooses “Java Heat” film because there are utterances of this film signify identity. Identifying identities in this film considers the social, cultural and religious aspects.
The researcher uses descriptive qualitative data rather than numerical data to collect the data. The writer watches the film and selects particular utterances that may indicate identity. to analyze the data, she considers the utterances to related theory proposed by Paltridge (2006) and several experts. The findings and discussion about identity in “Java” Heat film described qualitatively. In this part, the researcher uses discourse analysis approach proposed by Paltridge (2006).
The findings and analysis explores and describes how the concept of identity from two way constructions that the writer looked at the relationship between social variables such as social class and linguistic variables such as, utterances and words. The kinds of utterance in “Java Heat” film such as social and test show the identity of a person and thing. For the instance, the utterance “Mr Wilde, I'm Lieutenant Hashim. Detachment 88” used by one of characters in the film signifies the identity of a police and one of Detachment 88 members who handle and solve the terrorists case. It is investigated in script of “Java Heat” film that consists of linguistic and social variables. The writer finds people may hide or show the identity in particular contexts and purposes. Identity is also found in cultural and social construction. After analyzing the data, the researcher draws a conclusion in how discourse and identity work in a film.
The next researchers can do the similar research by investigating others linguistic variables such as vocabulary, expression, sentence and pronunciation. In addition, it is suggested for the next researchers to investigate identity based on several experts and sources that analyze identity in a film.
