Abstract

ABSTRACT

Sometimes phrases and clauses cannot be understood literally. Every word has its own meaning and sometimes it will have different meaning when it combines to the other word. Idiom is a language unique phenomenon consists of two words or more that has a unique. The meaning of idiom cannot be predicted literally, it can be phrase, clause or sentences. This study is focused on analyzing the idiomatic expression in the Hobbit: Unexpected Journey movie. It discusses the kinds of idiomatic expressions used by the characters and how the idiomatic expressions are used in their dialogue.

This research uses descriptive qualitative method due to the following reason. It focuses on describing and explaining the idiomatic expressions used in the conversation among the characters. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data using Cowie, Mackin and Mc Caig (1993) theory of idiom. The researcher analyzed by classifying the data, discussion and drawing conclusion.

The researcher finds three kinds of idiom taken from the dialogue among the character; they are clause idiom, phrase idiom and some of idiom that cannot be analyzed by the related theory.

This study is expected to help ESL, EFL learner and those interested in semantic analysis, especially on idiomatic expressions suggested to have a good comprehension on the context and contents of the English idioms in order to help them avoid having wrong interpretation. The researcher also suggested the future researcher to analyze more about the idiomatic expressions.
