Abstract

ABSTRACT

Human being often communicates each other as social creature. During the communication process, hesitation usually happens in their speaking. It is the activity of pause in producing the sound or utterance caused by some factors. It usually happens in spontaneous speaking. This research investigates the types of hesitation in lecturers at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University of Malang, especially in English Letters and Language Department. This research also reveals in what contexts hesitation happens in the utterance of the lecturers. This research is expected to give contribution toward the Psycholinguistic study especially in the development of hesitation studies.

To answer the research question, the researcher uses Rose’s theory (1998) to identify and analyze types of hesitation. In conducting this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative as research design and the data were collected by recording and transcribing the utterance to find out the types of hesitation and in what contexts the hesitation occurs

The findings reveal that there are kinds of hesitation’s type in utterance of lecturers, such as: false start, repetition, restart, self-correction, lengthening, silent pause, filled pause (unlexicalized and lexicalized). Unlexicalized filled pause is the dominant hesitation in the utterance of lecturers and it is followed by lengthening, lexicalized filled pause, repetition, silent pause, restart, false start and self-correction. Furthermore, it often goes with lengthening. There are 4 contexts of hesitation which are found in utterance of lecturers. The dominant context is context of giving explanation and it is followed by context of asking question, giving instruction, and getting interruption. It happens because the lecturers as thefacilitator in the class, who definitely give explanation more in the class through discussion, expressing toward student’s opinion, etc.
