Abstract

ABSTRACT

This thesis entitled Hesitation Used by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Speech In “The Indonesia Investment Day” At the New York Stock Exchange, New York, USA is intended to analyze the types and the functions of hesitation on the field of psycholinguistics used by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in his speech in the Indonesia Investment Day at New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), USA on September 24th, 2012. This research uses the theory of Maclay & Osgood (1959) and Rose’s (1998). This research found four types of hesitation that are used by SBY. There are repeats, self-correction, false start, and filled pause. The dominant he used is the self-correction, it occurred in the twelve data from the seven teen data. The functions of hesitation that are used SBY are to prepare the next word that will be uttered, to take a breath, and to achieve the interactional goal. The dominant function of hesitation is to achieve the interactional goal.
