Apology strategies used by the characters of “Maid In Manhattan“ movie

ABSTRACT

This study is entitled Apology Strategy used by the Characters in “ Maid in Manhattan” Movie is intended to analyze apology strategies which include types of apology used by the characters which found on the dialogue script movie of “Maid in Manhattan”.

The research used qualitative descriptive research design in finding apology strategies used because the data are the words, phrase, clause, and sentence that are used by characters of “Maid in Manhattan” movie. In analyzing the data, this study follows four steps: (1) finding and explaining the context of the utterance of apology expression in order to understand what the speaker utterance then classifying them into eight types of apology strategy based on Trosbrogh theory of apology. ; (2) identifying and describing the utterance based on the category of apology strategy; (3) discussing and analyzing the data using the theory of apology strategy proposed by Trosbrogh; (4) making conclusion based on the results of the data analysis to answer research problem.

The results of this research show the types of apology strategies used by characters of Maid in Manhattan movie which include rejection strategy, Acknowledgement of responsibility, Expression of Apology, Explanation or Account, Offer of Repair, Promise of forbearance, Minimizing the Degree of Offence, Expressing Concern for Hearer. The type which was not used by the characters is offer of repair because the apologizers ask apologizes truly to restore the mistakes in their communication.

Finally, the researcher suggests to the next researchers to examine apology strategy by using other theories for example, the theory which proposed by Cohen and Olshtain or proposed by Daniela Kramer-Moore and Michael Moore. In addition, this research recommended using the data from the real life such, the political debate, the speech of president or proselytizer, or in daily communication. Hopefully, it can give understanding and information to the readers in using apology strategies. For further researchers who are interested in the same study to use this study as comparison and direction or as additional reference for their future research.
