Abstract
ABSTRACT
Dissociation is an argumentative technique which has two split up terms and has three indicators to compose a consistent argumentation. The research of this technique is commonly conducted in monologue area. However, this research provide a new look of dissociation which is examined in dialogue area, namely debate. To begin with, the debaters need to resolve a different opinion by introducing a new definition, so that their own position is strengthened and still in their consistency. Therefore, the debaters are able to employ dissociation. This research is designed to examine what indicators of dissociation and on how those indicators are used by the debaters in IVED 2013.
This study employs mainly descriptive qualitative approach. I employ qualitative approach because this study is to get understanding comprehensively through the phenomena with the purpose to generate the theory of Rees (2009). Since I provide a new sight of dissociation that is utilized on dialogue, I utilize Pragma-Dialectics approach. Besides, I utilize descriptive analysis since the result of this research is coming from my interpretation in form of description regarding on the use of dissociation in debate. The data of this study are the debaters’ utterances written on script.
The outcome of this research shows that the debaters use dissociation by performing the three indicators of dissociation: distinction and definition speech acts, value hierarchy, and contradiction. Moreover, the finding of this research explains that dissociation is able to be applied on debate as critical discussion. It is because the process of dissociation completes the requirements of Pragma- Dialectics approach. It is proved by the use of dissociation technique is passing the model of stages in critical discussion including confrontation stage, opening stage, argumentation stage, and concluding stage. Furthermore, it is obeying the rules of commandment as well.
I recommend the next researchers to investigate the relevance argumentation within dissociation technique using theory of Walton (2003). It happens as through Rees’ theory (2009) in this research I cannot judge whether the argumentation used in dissociation are relevance or not. By knowing the relevance of argumentation enables the researchers realize that dissociation technique is used optimally. They could also analyze dissociation technique in political debate as the subject to know not only the dialectically soundness but also the rhetorically affectivity of dissociation use.
