Abstract

ABSTRACT

Interjection relates to the way of how people think when they are making conversation. People use interjection to state their mind or opinion. Interjection that they produced is in the form of word or non-word. In which those words are used to help them to create a new idea of their mind at list to refresh their mind. Every day, people use interjection in their speaking, such as eehmmm, eee, stttt, ouww, et cetera. In English debate competition; debaters also produce interjection to help debaters to find a good word or sentence. Moreover, it is used by debaters to refresh their mind and pauses for taking a breath.
In this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from the utterances from debaters in English Debate Competition 2012 in Brawijaya University which is related to the interjection whether it is in the form of word or non-word based on Ameka’s theory (1992) of interjection. The main aims of this research are to investigate the kinds of interjection produced by debaters in the English Debate Competition 2012 in Brawijaya University and to describe how the interjection processes are produced by debaters in the English Debate Competition 2012 in Brawijaya University.

There are 11 data found concerning with the use of interjection, namely aaaa, eeee, ahmm, ehmm, yes!!!, upch, ssttsstt, ieiek, excuse me, thank you sir, and errr. Those interjections are used to express some emotion like worries, difficulties, nervousness, getting the recipients’ attention, rejecting other opinions, and feeling unconfident. The findings show that the various meaning of interjection is based on the context of time and situation. Moreover, face expression and eyes contact used by the speaker can also influence the meaning of interjection.

This research suggests to the next researchers to do relevant topic but different subjects, or language so that various results of research related to the use of interjections are available.
