Abstract
ABSTRACT
Code mixing is very important for everyone, especially for people who leave in multilingual society. Sometimes they need some languages to speak with other people around them. Some of them mix their native language with foreign language or their native language with their second language, such as Malaysian people who often use their language and mix it with English. They must have purpose why they do code mixing. Knowing that phenomenon, the researcher conducts a research about code mixing, the subject is a Malaysian movie. The title is Tipu Kanan Tipu Kiri. The characters are from Malaysia which has English as their second language and three of them are from Indonesia. The characters in the movie often insert English into their conversation.
The purposes of this research are to find out the type and form of code mixing used by Malaysian people in the movie and the reason of doing code mixing. Perhaps the writer or the reader can be motivated to keep their ability of speaking with foreign language and practice it inreal life.
The method of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from the utterances spoken by the characters in Tipu Kanan Tipu Kiri movie. In gathering the data, the researcher watched, listened the movie for several times and wrote the utterances spoken by the characters and also by reading the subtitle written in the movie. Then the data were presented and analyzed by using the theory of code mixing of Wardhaugh, Harding, and Suwito.
The result of the analysis shows that the type of code mixing of all the utterances in the data are outer code mixing because the characters basically speak with Malay language and mix it with English. The characters often use English words and phrases, they seldom mix English in a sentence and idiom. Factors that make the characters using code mixing are mostly because they have close emotional and personal relationship with people they are speaking with. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to have research more deeply on code mixing. Finally the researcher hopes this research can give beneficial contribution to the readers, especially for them who would like to have a research about code mixing in other aspects.
