Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking, "literature" is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction. Fiction is a work of the imagination or invention, which contrasts with non-fiction (which is usually thought to be based on facts). Written works like novels, short stories, plays, and poems are fictional.
Related to the explanation above, it was interesting in conducting a psychological analysis entitled” The Main Character’s Need In Elizabeth Dunkle’s Every Woman Loves Russian Poet (Based on Abraham Maslow’s Theory)”. In this thesis, the researcher wants to applies psychological analysis as the approach of the analysis on novel “Every Woman Loves Russian Poet”
The researcher observed by theory of needs by Abraham Maslow. The theory is suitable to be used in this research, because this research will describe psychological condition of the main character on novel “Every Woman Loves Russian Poet”. The contains of novel is related much with psychological approach, Katia as the main character is someone who wants to gain the third need five basic needs by Abraham Maslow’s theory and others needs.
Methodologically, researcher applies psychological approach to deal with the data, the approach is to find out the aspect of the main character’s needs in the novel “Every Woman Loves Russian Poet” by Elizabeth Dunkel and elaborate the psychological theory which is Abraham Maslow’s five hierarchy of needs theory. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds that Kate needs to have sex, because for along time she never had it, and the second need is love and belongingness, because she needs friend, love, and belongingness for others, she loves Boris, dr.Manne. After getting friend and love, she does not want to lost him, because she has been waiting for him for along time. Self-esteem is when she was afraid to be leaved by her love, so she does everything that makes him stay besides her. And the last one is self-actualization, She efforts to reach it. She does some activities to get the self-actualization by seeking self-fulfillment, personal growth and peak experiences. She seeks them by going anywhere although she never gains what she wants.
