Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study analyzes about the verb patterns in John Mc Cain’s political speech. The verb patterns are grammatical rules of verb proposed by Hornby’s theory. They are devided into twenty five patterns. The patterns 1 to 5 are verb used intransitive and 6 to 25 used transitive verb. This study is very important to be conducted because verb pattern is the most important pattern of sentence that is connected with tenses in grammatical form of verb.
In order to bring this study into its purpose, the reseacher formulates two problems; (1) What verb patterns used just for independent clauses are found in John McCain’s Political Speech based on Horby’s theory? (2)What verb patterns used in John McCain’s Political Speech are not used in the theory of verb patterns proposed by Hornby?
The reseacher uses the descriptive qualitative method because the speech attempts to arrive at rich description of words, phrases and sentences on political speech of John Mc Cain. The data are taken from the text of speech which is delivered by McCain from his website, www.john-mccain.com. From the data sources, the researcher analyzes and investigates the verb patterns found in the speech. Then, this study employs the reseacher herself as primary instrument to gather data.
Based on the data, the reseacher found that among 25 verb patterns proposed by Hornby’s theory, there are 15 verb patterns used in political speech of John Mc Cain and 4 verb patterns which are not used by Hornby’s theory.
Finally, the reseacher expects that the result of this study is hopefully used by English teachers, English students and the next researchers. For the next reseachers who want to analyze the same topic of this thesis. They should do better and use other theory that can support and complite the theories of the reseacher used. The last, the reseacher hopes that this result will be useful for the reader and the reseacher who want to make the research in the same topic but on different aspect.
