Abstract
ABSTRACT
Stuttering is the condition when someone cannot speak normally, he or she will speak by repetition, pause or block. This disorder typically happens on boys than girls. This research analyzes about the language disorder of stuttered character in the King’s Speech movie. Stuttered people get difficulties in spoken language. It influences their daily communication. One word has very significant meaning for the stuttered people which we never realize it. This phenomenon happens in the movie King’s Speech. This study finds out about the types of expressive language disorder and the characteristics of stuttering which happens in King’s Speech movie. This study also analyzes the context which influences the main character’s stuttering.
This study uses descriptive qualitative design. It is to describe the language production of the man in the King’s Speech movie. In addition, the data are in the forms of sentences. This study gave description on the types of stuttering produce by the main character in the film King’s Speech. The main instrument of this study is the researcher herself. To collect the data there are some steps done in this study: watching, transcribing the script, finding the script of movie in internet and comparing the data, collecting and selecting data, and organizing the data. The data are presented and analyzed by using language disorder theory proposed by David Carroll.
Based on the finding of this research, there are two kinds of expressive language disorder found in stuttering utterances in Bertie’s speaking in the movie King’s Speech namely fluency disorder and voice disorder. Fluency disorder is the most common language disorder that occurs in Bertie’s speech which is mainly in prolongation. The most dominant context causing fluency disorder that occurs in Bertie’s speaking is when Bertie feels angry. This study also finds that there are some characteristics of stuttering in Bertie’s speaking. Those characteristics are unfilled pause, avoidance behavior, positive condition and negative condition. The most common characteristics of stuttering which happens in Bertie’s speaking is unfilled pause in negative condition caused by some factors namely feeling nervous, being angry and stressful.
Finally, after finishing this study, the researcher has some suggestions concerning to the topic of stuttering. To other people who speak with stuttered people must be patient and not to make them under pressured. Everyone who communicates with stuttered people should create good atmosphere in speaking and make his or her comfortable in speaking.
