A Syntactic Analysis on the reading comprehension texts used in the National Final Examination in Senior High School

ABSTRACT

This research examines Reading Comprehension Texts used in the National Final Examination in Senior High School. Then, this research focuses on Reading Comprehension Texts which is in the form of Exposition text used in the National Final Examination in Senior High School especially in major of science in 2010. In analyzing this data, the researcher uses the theory of Chinese Box in Syntactical Structure that proposed by W. Nelson Francis (1958). This research investigates two problems, they are: (1) What Syntactic Structures are found on the Reading Comprehension Texts used in the National Final Examination in Senior High School? and (2). How are those Syntactic Structures applied in Chinese boxes?.

Qualitative method is used in doing this research because the data are in the form of words from the transcript of bank questions of the National Final Examination (UN). Moreover this is a descriptive research as the research presents the findings descriptively describing the kind of syntactic structures are found on the Reading Comprehension Texts.

The result of this research finds the four kinds of syntactic structures: (1) structure of modification, (2) structure of predication, (3) structure of complementation, and (4) structure of coordination.

Based on the result of this research, the researcher hopes for the next researcher to investigate all kinds of Reading Comprehension Texts used in the National Final Examination in Senior High School. Besides, the researcher hopes it will be useful for the teachers and students in Senior High School in understanding each context of any kinds of Reading Comprehension Texts based on its grammatical structure used especially in syntactic structures.
